About the District

A board of five fire commissioners governs every fire district in New York State. These commissioners are elected by those who are registered to vote in the Pines at the annual election held on the second Tuesday of July each year. Each commissioner is elected for a five-year term commencing on the 1st of January following the election. One commissioner is elected each year so that there will always be experienced commissioners on the board. Fire district commissioners receive no compensation. Meetings of the commissioners are open to the public and the schedule of the meetings can be found below. Each commissioner is assigned to a committee which generally cover the following responsibilities:

  • Manage property: Commissioners are responsible for the district's property, including purchasing, leasing, selling, and maintaining buildings and equipment.

  • Develop budget: Commissioners create the annual budget for the fire district, including the tax levy that funds the district.

  • Adopt rules: Commissioners create rules and regulations for the fire company, including the duties of members and the process for discipline.

  • Approve members and officers: Commissioners approve new members and officers for the fire company, and can remove members for cause.

  • Audit claims: Commissioners audit all claims against the district and approve those that can be paid.

  • Ensure compliance: Commissioners ensure that the rules and regulations of the board of fire commissioners are followed.

Welcome

The Fire Island Pines Fire District encompasses the geographic boundaries of the community of Fire Island Pines and the Fire Protection District of Water Island, which has contracted for fire protection services.

In 1959 the Fire District established the Fire Island Pines Volunteer Fire Department to provide fire protection services to the community. Since that time the loyal volunteers have worked to preserve and protect life and property by means of public education and prevention.
